FIFA World Cup 2014 – Ole Ole Ole Rica!

England have fallen victim to the lethal bite of Luis Suarez again. The Europeans flailed against the Uruguayan goal-machine as Costa Rica sealed the English team’s elimination in a shock 1-0 win against Italy the following morning with former British press victim Bryan Ruiz scoring the winner.

He was mocked in the English Premier League, and ridiculed mercilessly in previous years by the press. But finally, Costa Rican midfielder Bryan Ruiz has had his say. Scoring in the 44th minute against an off-the-pace Italy side, the veteran headed in the winner at the back post to seal an unlikely direct passage to the round of 16 for the south Americans, and a long flight home for the English. However, the story could have been much different. Playing Uruguay in a must win encounter only the day before, England went behind in the 39th minute to a Luis Suarez header and fans in Sao Paulo, most supporting the un-fancied South Americans, went wild. But they didn’t give up, and when Wayne Rooney grabbed his first World Cup goal in 8 years, they must have though the omens were on their side.

However, it was not to be.

Suarez upped his game to another level, responding to Rooney’s 75th minute equalizer with a stunning drive in the 84th minute from just inside the box, leaving goalkeeper Joe Hart stranded. A few more chances went by, and England found themselves relying on their “good” friends from Italy to get the job done against Costa Rica the next day. However, even the sturdy Italians couldn’t break down the flamboyant South American outfit. After a slow start, Ruiz made it 1-0 for the Costa Ricans just before half time and Italy never recovered. England is out at the first hurdle. Their hollow dream is over.

Final Results:     Uruguay 2-1 England         Italy 0-1 Costa Rica
